Wedding by the Sea

The wedding of Ethel Peters to Capt. Smedley Butler, USMC in 1905 was the highlight of Bay Head. The couple was married at All Saints Church and the reception was on the lawn of the Felton "cottage" built in 1888 by Ethel's grandfather, Samuel M. Felton, Jr. The Felton cottage was dubbed the Owl House years later for the iron owls added at its staircase. A WWI tale spread that their red electric eyes were signalling German subs. Doubtful, but a good story. The Grenville Arms Hotel was across the street from the Felton cottage. Smedley Butler became a famous general and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
