Sunday Bathers

The big bathing pavilion in this scene was one of the first buildings in Bay Head. In the early 1880s its 2nd floor was used for church services, charity bazaars and minstrel shows. The Peek-A-Boo Cottage was next door, named for its distinctive porches, which were remodeled in 1925. Both buildings are gone, but the house on the left, the Howard Clark Cottage, built in 1895, still exists, fully restored. The house is oriented north/south in contrast to facing east, which Clark chose as an experiment in ventilation. Clark was a commodore of the Bay Head Yacht Club from 1897-1901 and oversaw construction of the second clubhouse (see "July Fourth, 1909" by the artist). This painting has 100 people in it, with lots of activity!
