Sacred Heart at Harris

In 1914, the Church of the Sacred Heart was erected on the southwest corner of Main Ave and Harris St. The new church building cost $6,167. There was an amusing logic in its location, for this had been "Priest's corner" since the 1880s.Pharmacist Joseph Priest of Toms River built Priest's Pharmacy on Main Avenue in 1881, just two years after the founders of Bay Head had set up shop to sell lots. When Mr. Priest opened for business, there were fewer than 40 houses in the town. Before Sacred Heart was built there, Priest's corner was occupied by public tennis courts, the only ones in Bay Head. These courts fell into disuse after the Bay Head Yacht Club installed tennis courts in 1909. Sacred Heart remained at Priest's corner for 14 years. In 1927, with a growing congregation requiring more space, the church acquired land at the present location on Main Ave, between Goetze and Strickland St, and the church building was moved down Main Avenue.
