Bluffs Beach

This was painted in 1978 and was LaBonte's first beach scene in his "primitive" style. It imagines the Bluffs Hotel of Bay Head, NJ about 1895. To the south, there was nothing but dune grass and bayberry as far as the eye could see--and beyond that. Hard to see here but there's a girl on the boardwalk poking a guy with her tennis racket. The artist spotted that vignette in an old postcard. He also imported the group in the foreground from A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte painted in 1884, by Georges Seurat.
